Episode 352: A Very Different Defence

The Trade Deadline has passed, and the Calgary Flames now have a very different-looking defence group. The guys discuss the new additions to the team, the loss of Noah Hanifin and if the deal was good for the Flames and if they’re surprised Jacob Markstrom is still a Flame. With the team now sliding further from a playoff spot Dan and Matt also give their opinions about if the Flames can be a playoff team this year.

We’re still riding a high from the Miikka Kiprusoff jersey retirement game and a 2-0 week for the Calgary Flames which of course we discuss in detail. The guys give their thoughts as to who is the best Flames goalie of all time – Kiprusoff or Vernon. Then as they look ahead to NHL Trade Deadline, they discuss the Chris Tanev trade and what to expect in Artyom Grushnikov, Jacob Markstrom’s comments that “I think it could have been handled a lot different from up top.” and if we expect any other deals besides Noah Hanifin to be done before the deadline.

Of the three “must-win” games this week against the Habs, the Flames only managed to win two wins. There is still mathematically a change the team can make the post-season, but realistically they’re out. So we start to discuss what roster changes might happen in the off-season and what the team’s weaknesses are what can be filled internally, versus bringing in free agents. The guys also discuss Hanifin’s season-ending injury and what defencemen need to step up to fill that spot, and how Michael Stone has been a surprise this season.

Episode 181: A Hurricane of Flames News

There has been a lot of Flames news since the season ended – Bill Peters is the new Head Coach (and has a new coaching staff), The Flames made a big trade with the Carolina Hurricanes, and the GM says they aren’t done making changes yet.

We’ll recap all the happenings since the season ended, and look ahead to July 1 when Free Agency opens. Who do we expect the Flames to sign? Who are we sad to see go? What will it cost to sign the players the Flames need? These questions and more are answered here.
