Episode 350: So Close But So Far From A Playoff Spot

After a disappointing week last week, the Calgary Flames won all three of their games this week and still sit outside a playoff spot. The guys talk about the crazy Battle of Alberta game this week and the big roles Dryden Hunt and Dan Vladar played in the win. With Andrei Kuzmenko playing up and down the lineup lately, we discuss if he is the player Flames fans hoped for when he was acquired. To wrap up the show we share our thoughts on Miikka Kiprusoff’s jersey retirement which happens this Saturday (March 2).

Episode 339: Trade Talk Abound

Trade rumours have been surrounding the Calgary Flames this week. Nikita Zadorov has asked for a trade and Noah Hanifin and Chris Tanev are rumoured to be on the trade block as well. Dan is back this week and the guys discuss these trades if their thoughts on Jonathan Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri have changed and their thoughts on the new Calgary Wranglers’ “Outlaw” third jersey featuring Blasty.

The Calgary Flames have made another big splash by signing Nazem Kadri to a $49 million dollar contract (the second highest in franchise history) and trading Sean Monahan to the Montreal Canadiens to free up salary cap space. This week we discuss if the Elias Lindholm is better for the Flames as a Right Winger, or a Centre this season and which version of the lineup we think will hide some of the team’s weaknesses and give them the best chance of success for the next week of games.

The guys discuss if it’s time to look at Tkachuk and Lindholm as their top two instead of Monahan and Gaudreau – and if so, does it make it easier to trade Monahan or Gaudreau?  Of course we need to talk trades prior to the Trade Deadline, and is it time to move on from TJ Brodie to fill the gaps on the forward ranks? How about Mikael Backlund?

One month into the season the Flames are riding high in a four game win streak. The Calgary Flames finally seems to be coming into their own, but how long can the team win games in the last 20 minutes? and how much is their goaltending to blame for their bad starts?

We can’t avoid the goaltending discussion again – who should get starting minutes? Do the Flames need to acquire a goalie, and if so at what cost? Can the team promote from within to solve their goaltending issues? Outside the net the Flames have a lot of players doing things right. Sean Monahan was the first star of the week, and Monahan, Gaudreau and Tkachuk are in the top 10 in league scoring with Lindholm not far behind at number 13. Plus, we debate if Dillon Dube should be in the NHL or AHL right now, who his replacement might be, and answer a question for a Flames fan in the UK.

Episode 132: Roasted Duck

The Flames swept this week, winning everything including a big 8-3 win over the Anaheim Ducks. The team looks like they’re turning things around, currently sitting tied for a Wildcard playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Flames lines are looking different these days with some players returning, some out, and Gaudreau and Monahan playing on different lines. We look at each Flames line and how it’s contributing to the team’s success.

At the 1/3 point of the season we look at Flames stats so far, what players are doing well and who is slumping, and we’ll look at the results of the Flames Super Skills competition.

Even after a good week with 2 of 3 possible wins, The Flames once again find themselves closer to winning the Draft Lottery than the Stanley Cup, and things are getting tense. Coach Harley left the ice early after a practice where the team wasn’t showing the effort they need to be – and Bouma and Monahan showed up late. With Mason Raymond not playing his best the Flames reassigned him to the AHL this week, and brought Jakub Nakladal up to fill in for Wideman (who is suspended 20 games).

We recap the last week of hockey and look ahead to another ‘do or die’ week for the Flames, and predict how they will do. Plus we’ll cover some trade rumours and other news and discussion for the C of Red this week.
